Vietnam War 50th Commemoration

In 2015, the City of Camarillo became a Commemorative Partner in the Department of Defense Vietnam War 50th Commemoration program. The City sponsored six events over three years to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War period for their service. The City fulfilled its commitment as a Commemorative Partner with the last event held on November 10, 2018. Information and photos from each event can be accessed via the links below.

May 21, 2016 – Constitution Park

Veteran Recognition Ceremony:  Certificates of Recognition and Commemorative Lapel Pins were presented to Vietnam veterans by the City Council.

September 17, 2016 – Serra Center
Observance of National POW-MIA Recognition Day featuring guest speaker Captain Chris Janke, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Ventura County, and a performance by the Navy Band SW Brass Quintet.

May 29, 2017 – Conejo Mountain Memorial Park
52nd Annual Memorial Day service co-hosted with Conejo Mountain Funeral Home.  Keynote speaker was Captain Jeffrey Kilian USN Commodore, 30th Naval Construction Regiment.  The service included a Memorial Bell Ceremony for 14 Camarillo-area servicemembers killed in action in Vietnam.

August 19-20, 2017 – Wings Over Camarillo Airshow "Salute to Veterans"
The City of Camarillo co-sponsored the event with Wings Over Camarillo to provide free entry tickets to Vietnam veterans who completed online signup.

February 10, 2018 – Rancho Campana High School performing Arts Center
The City hosted a panel discussion titled "The Vietnam War: What It Means for Us Today".  Panelists included: Captain Charlie Plumb, USNR, (Ret.), former six-year Prisoner of War in Vietnam; Larry Hawley, local Vietnam combat veteran; Janet Richards, Vietnam veteran and former U.S. Army Lt. Nurse; and P. Scott Corbett, PhD, CSU Channel Islands History Lecturer.  Moderator was Lyn Fairly, KVTA radio host.

November 10, 2018 – Veterans Memorial Monument Dedication – Constitution Park
The City and American Legion Post 741 hosted a dedication ceremony for the newly completed Veterans Memorial Monument. The monument honors 36 servicemembers from the Camarillo-Somis area who fought and gave their lives in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Southwest Asia. The ceremony included a special certificate presentation to families of the Vietnam War fallen as part of the City's participation in The Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Program.
